The Sound of November
A Lakeside Meditation
There’s something about November that stirs the soul. The air feels different—cooler, quieter, full of reflection. The golden leaves have drifted away, the lake settles into stillness, and the world seems to move in slow motion. It’s as if nature itself is inviting us to pause, to breathe, and to listen.
November is a month of gratitude—a season to step back and notice all that we hold dear before the rush of the holidays sweeps us along. It’s a time to give thanks for family and friends, for our health, for the comfort of home, and for the beauty that surrounds us here in the Lakes Region. From the morning mist that rolls across the water to the echo of loons at dusk, there’s a quiet reminder everywhere that life is precious, fleeting, and full of grace.
Just recently, we were gifted the glow of a supermoon—its light shimmering across the lake like a path of silver. Moments like that pull us back to stillness, to awe, to connection. November has a way of doing that—encouraging us to slow down, to find balance, and to stay in a gentle state of flow.
But gratitude doesn’t end with reflection; it also inspires action. As we give thanks, we might also ask ourselves:
What am I grateful for today? How can I give back—to my community, to my loved ones, to the world around me?
Whether it’s a small act of kindness, lending a hand to a neighbor, or simply being present for someone who needs to be heard, giving back keeps us grounded. It allows gratitude to ripple outward, much like the water that expands from a single pebble dropped into the lake.
A Lakeside Meditation for November
Find a quiet space—perhaps by the water, on your porch, or in a peaceful corner of your home. Sit comfortably and take a moment to simply arrive. Let your shoulders drop, soften your gaze, and allow your breath to settle into its natural rhythm.
Close your eyes and imagine the scene: the lake before you, calm and reflective, the cool air brushing against your skin. The faint scent of pine and damp earth fills the air. A few last leaves drift across the surface of the water. Above, the lingering glow of the supermoon still seems to hang in your memory, a soft light that soothes the spirit.
Take a deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs with calm, gratitude, and clarity.
Hold that breath gently.
Then exhale slowly through your mouth, letting go of anything that no longer serves you—tension, worry, old thoughts, restlessness.
With each inhale, think of something you are grateful for: your health, your family, your home, this moment of peace.
With each exhale, release whatever keeps you from feeling fully present.
Feel the steady ground beneath you—earth supporting you, holding you. Imagine your breath syncing with the rhythm of nature around you, flowing effortlessly in and out.
Stay here for a few moments, listening to the quiet within and around you. Let your thoughts drift like ripples across the lake, growing smaller until all that remains is stillness.
When you open your eyes, carry that peace with you into the rest of your day. Remember that November is not only a time to be thankful but also a chance to reconnect—with yourself, with nature, and with the beauty of this place we’re lucky enough to call home.
The sound of November is soft and steady—a whisper of wind through the pines, the quiet lap of water on the shore, the echo of gratitude in the heart. It’s an invitation to breathe, to be, and to simply give thanks.
